Ramen underwent unique development from when it was first served at a Chinatown in a port after Japan opened its doors to national trade in the Meiji period, and changes were made to fit Japanese people’s taste. Currently, it has become one of the most popular foods along with curry rice, often referred to as the “national food of Japan.” All Japanese people have great passion for ramen.

However, Japanese ramen is not fundamentally halal.
In this report, we will introduce 3 restaurants serving halal ramen in Japan. All ramen at each store tastes different and are unique. We recommend you try out several restaurants and check out the difference for yourself, and get in touch with the Japanese culture.

Naritaya

Naritaya offers standard ramen referred to as “Chinese noodles” in Asakusa. The soup is made from slowly cooked halal chicken, seafood, vegetables, and served with hand-made halal noodles. “Maze-soba,” ramen which does not include soup, is the most popular on the menu. The restaurant also serves sambal, puddings, etc. and has satisfying product line-up. They are thorough in preparing an exclusive prayer space, and is highly supported by Muslim people.

Ippin

A restaurant owned by Upin&Ipin in Malaysia.
Also located in Asakusa, the ramen here is served with thick white chicken soup. White chicken soup is made by slowly stewing whole chicken and chicken bones along with other ingredients, thereby making it thick and cloudy. The umami (good flavor) of chicken highlights the mild and rich flavor. The chicken used is not only hahal, but is a high-quality free range chicken called “AMAKUSA DAIO.” We recommend you try the ramen with yuzu kosho (also called citron pepper, a condiment made with yuzu rinds and green chili). Spicy ramen is the most popular, and other dishes include Japanese style curry, kara-age, chicken gyoza, etc.

Nikko-ken

NINNOKEN is an immensely popular ramen restaurant that has been in business since 1929 in Sano-city, Tochigi Prefecture, which is slightly distant from Tokyo. Their unique hand-made noodles are created using bamboos. The full-bodied medium-thick noodles are served with rich soy-sauce flavored soup. The ramen was perfected through many trials and errors to satisfy the taste of Muslim people. Dreamy texture is created when the light but flavorful soup meets the noodles. There are many more halal menus including gyoza, omurice (or omelet- rice, ketchup-flavored pilaf or fried rice wrapped served with an omelet on top), hiyashi chuuka (cold Chinese noodles served with meat and vegetables on top), etc. The restaurant is filled with many Muslim customers visiting from all over the Kanto region by word of mouth.
