Renowned as a culinary paradise, Fukuoka Prefecture continues to captivate both domestic and international travelers. In recent years, growing global demand for food diversity—such as vegan- and Muslim-friendly options—has led to an increase in local establishments responding to these needs.

In this feature, we highlight 15 restaurants and accommodations in Fukuoka that have newly developed inclusive menus. From plant-based pastas to halal-certified dishes, these offerings reflect both creativity and cultural sensitivity. We also share feedback from vegan and Muslim tasting monitors who sampled the new items firsthand.

1. Italian Restaurant Ante Enato (Grand Empire Hotel)

Located in Onojo City, Italian Restaurant Ante Enato is part of the Grand Empire Hotel, known for its elegant atmosphere and high-quality service. The hotel hosts weddings, banquets, and fine dining experiences for both local and international guests.

In its latest initiative, Ante Enato has introduced a new line of vegan- and Muslim-friendly Italian dishes—including appetizers, pizza, pasta, and desserts. Additionally, the restaurant developed halal-friendly meat and seafood offerings to cater specifically to Muslim guests.

A vegan tasting monitor shared this glowing review:
“The homemade pizza dough was perfect, with a fragrant wheat aroma and chewy texture. The pasta was rich in garlic flavor and truly appetizing. The tofu-based dessert was a delightful surprise. Despite the simplicity of ingredients, every dish tasted as satisfying as a regular menu item. It’s something anyone can enjoy.”

2. Tsuruhei , Amu Plaza Kokura Store

Founded in 1923, Tsuruhei is a long-standing wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop that continues to blend tradition with innovation. To clearly indicate its vegan- and Muslim-friendly offerings, the shop has introduced price cards marked with a logo identifying products free of animal ingredients and alcohol.

3. Kanedai Miso

Located in the scenic village of Toho, Kanedai is a traditional brewery specializing in miso and soy sauce made using time-honored methods. Recently, the company has been exploring plant-based fermentation products with an eye on the international vegan market.

Their newest product is a vegan-friendly strawberry amazake smoothie—a naturally sweetened, sugar-free drink made from fresh local strawberries and fermented rice.

“Just the right amount of sweetness, and you can really taste the depth of the koji. It’s easy to drink and perfect for breakfast.”

4. Manten-no-Niwa Villa

Manten-no-Niwa is a villa-style accommodation nestled in the lush nature of Tanushimaru. Known for its health-conscious meals, the property has developed both Japanese and Western-style vegan breakfasts exclusively for guests.

The Japanese-style breakfast oden uses a kombu and shiitake broth, featuring tofu and local vegetables without any animal-based ingredients.

“Each ingredient really shines with its natural flavor, and the broth made from vegetables had an incredibly deep taste that made me forget it was vegan. I felt full and satisfied.”

5. Smile Collat Cafe

This cozy café is known for its homemade meals and warm, family-friendly vibe. For its new initiative, the café developed a vegan-friendly Buddha bowl salad, Neapolitan pasta, and mushroom soup.

Of particular note is the vegan Neapolitan—an original recipe that uses no butter, cheese, or animal products. Instead, it maximizes the umami of tomato sauce and mushrooms.

“Vegan-style Neapolitan pasta was a pleasant surprise. The sauce was rich, and the mushrooms added a deep umami flavor. It was delicious.”

6. Caffè Mattina

Located in Yukuhashi City, Caffè Mattina offers a wide variety of healthy dishes using local ingredients. In their latest initiative, the café developed a Muslim-friendly “Chicken Tsukune Burger with Soft Bone” using halal-certified chicken.

The dish is served as a plate meal featuring homemade waffles and tsukune (chicken patties). Guests can enjoy each item separately or sandwich the tsukune between the waffles for a fun, burger-style twist.

A Muslim tasting monitor commented:
“The chicken tsukune was incredibly delicious, and I loved the option to eat it in different ways. It’s a clever and tasty idea.”

Sushi Shima

Sushi Shima is a renowned sushi restaurant in Fukuoka City, known for its use of fresh, local seafood. Last year, the restaurant earned praise for its “tonkotsu-style vegan ramen.” This year, they’ve introduced a halal-friendly homemade roast beef bowl.

Created with the hope of delighting Muslim diners, this hearty dish features Japanese halal-certified beef and a house-made sauce.

“The beef was incredibly tender and mild in flavor, and the portion was generous. I could eat this endlessly!”

Princess Phi Phi Mojiko

Located in the Mojiko district of Kitakyushu, Princess PiPi Mojiko is a popular restaurant famous for its signature baked curry. The restaurant has recently introduced three new Muslim-friendly dishes.

These include the “Vegetable Sommelier Baked Curry,” which uses coconut milk, custom-blended spices, and halal-certified duck to recreate the rich flavors of their classic baked curry; “Fugu Fish & Chips”; and a “Chicken Steak” made with halal-certified meat.

A Muslim monitor commented:
“Everything tasted excellent, with fragrant spices and satisfying portions. It was a fulfilling meal.”

Teppan & Monjayaki SAKURAYA

SAKURAYA in Kurume City is a hybrid izakaya that offers both teppanyaki and monjayaki dishes. Known for its creative use of local ingredients and an extensive canned food selection, the restaurant has now developed a vegan-friendly monjayaki.

By replacing animal-based broth with a plant-based alternative and using plenty of mushrooms and vegetables, the dish offers a healthy yet satisfying experience.

“The broth aroma was fantastic, and the texture was fun. It was plenty satisfying even as a vegan dish.”

Senfuku Banrai

Located near Fukuoka Airport, Senfuku Banrai specializes in authentic local dishes. With increasing inbound tourism, the restaurant has embraced food diversity by developing a halal-friendly motsunabe (offal hotpot) and mentaiko chazuke (rice with spicy cod roe and soup).

The set meal, which includes fried chicken, uses only halal-certified beef and chicken, without pork or alcohol-based seasonings.

A Muslim tasting monitor noted:
“The motsunabe broth was rich and flavorful—just like the traditional version. The mentaiko chazuke, made with fugu broth, was a completely new experience for me. The balance of rice, fugu broth, and mentaiko was exquisite.”

Maikai Hanamana uvatea

Maikai Hanamana uvatea, located in central Fukuoka City, is a relaxation salon themed around traditional Hawaiian healing. In addition to offering treatments like Ayurveda and herbal steam therapy, the space provides a calming environment for both body and mind. The café also emphasizes health-conscious meals, and has recently developed a vegan-friendly loco moco.

The dish features a plant-based patty made with shiitake mushrooms, topped with a homemade sauce. Its hearty texture and umami flavor make it a satisfying meat-free option.

“It looked just like a hamburger, so I was shocked to learn it was made with shiitake mushrooms. The entire dish was delicious, and the atmosphere was lovely. I’ll definitely recommend it to my friends.”

Mimatsu Coffee

Beloved by locals, Mimatsu Coffee is a cozy café offering freshly roasted coffee and thoughtfully crafted sweets. In their latest effort, the café developed a vegan-friendly galette using seasonal vegetables.

Unlike typical galettes made with eggs and cheese, this version is 100% plant-based, featuring basil sauce, cabbage, green peppers, and onions for a wholesome and healthy meal.

“It was simple and delicious.”

With several universities nearby, the café hopes to promote this dish as a healthy option for students and homemakers alike.

Mojikoi®

Mojikoi® is located in Mojiko Retro, Kyushu’s northernmost tourist spot, and is known for its regional specialty: baked curry. The restaurant has recently introduced a vegan version that contains no animal products, five pungent spices, or alcohol.

A vegan tasting monitor commented:
“The aroma was wonderful, and the spice balance was just right.”

The curry is now available in both mild and spicy varieties, and can be topped with newly developed vegetable cutlets. Vegan parfaits are also in development to offer even more variety.

Real Jam

Real Jam is a bakery in Higashi Ward that specializes in gluten-free bread. It’s a favorite among health-conscious customers and those with allergies. The café recently launched a new vegan-friendly menu item.

The dish is a unique spin on “kimbap”—a Korean-style seaweed roll—made with gluten-free bread instead of rice. It features plant-based fillings such as soy meat, creating a completely original, fresh take on the traditional dish.

WADACHI

WADACHI is an izakaya located in Kitakyushu City’s Kokurakita Ward, known for its creative use of local ingredients. The restaurant has previously developed specialty dishes using regional products, and now offers vegan-friendly gyoza and ramen.

The vegan gyoza are filled with a tofu and vegetable mixture blended with special spices. The ramen uses no animal products, yet achieves a rich, satisfying flavor from a broth made with kombu and shiitake mushrooms.

“The ramen was so well-made, I couldn’t believe it was vegan. It was incredibly satisfying.”

The restaurant is exploring creative ways to serve these dishes to make them even more accessible to all guests.
