Financial Aids and Loans for Individuals Provided by Japan’s Government

The world’s condition is tough after the COVID-19 pandemic attacked. People in the world are economically damaged as reported on the news or the experience of people around us. Japan’s government provides some financial aid and loan systems for people who cannot afford their daily living expenses.

Here are some financial aid/loans that every single person who lives in Japan is able to apply for. However, some of the financial aids below can only be applied in Japanese, so if you need any language help, feel free to contact us.

Temporary Loan Emergency Funds

Type of Financial Aid

Loan

Application Due Date

August 31st, 2021.

Eligible Person

People who lose jobs or got income reductions due to the COVID-19 outbreak and need money to make a living.

Requirement

Got income reduction due to COVID-19 outbreak caused by reduction of working time or lost job.

Where to apply

Nearest welfare center (website in Japanese).

Amount

Maximum 100,000 yen (for individuals).

※You can start to return the money after a year and finish returning them in 2 years since you start your payback.
※No interest applied.

Benefit for House Securing

Type of Financial Aid

September 30th, 2021.

Eligible Person

People who lose jobs, or reduce their income due to COVID-19, and having difficulties paying house rent.

Requirements

・Those who leave the job or close the business within 2 years OR those with income reduction caused by the business’ temporarily closed AND those with the same condition to leave a job or business closed DUE TO COVID-19.
・There are some other requirements for your income amount and saving which depends on where you live. Please visit your nearest self-reliance support center for more information.

Amount

Housing fee for 3 months.
※Can be extended 2 times (maximum of 9 months).

Temporary Special Benefit for Households with Children

Type of Financial Aid

Eligible Person

① Single-parent households with low income.
② Households with children which are classified as exemption of residence tax (due to low-income).

Requirements For ①

・Receiving child allowance in April 2021 (payment in May 2021)
Those who received child allowance in April 2021 are supposed to automatically (without any application in advance) get the household life support special benefit with an amount of 50,000 yen in May 2021. For those who did not receive the allowance/benefit, please check with your nearest city hall.

・NOT receiving child allowance.
If you are not receiving child allowance because of receiving a public pension or household income reductions due to the COVID-19 outbreak after January 2021.

Requirements For ②

・Receiving child allowance.
・Receiving an exemption of residence tax.
・Those who don’t receive child allowance (high school student and up will not receive child allowance) but receive the residence tax exemption.
・Those who got income reductions caused by the COVID-19 outbreak after January 2021.

Amount

50,000/1 child under age 18 (age 20 for those with a disability).

Benefit for Supporting Employee Due to Business Closure

Those who can apply

If the employee did not receive any kind of leave payment from the employer due to the business’ temporary closure.

Requirements

Those who cannot do the job due to temporary closure caused by the COVID-19 outbreak (with the condition where the employer asked you to leave during the closure period) and do not receive any leave payment from the employer during the following period.

The employee of small -to -medium-sized enterprise
April 1st, 2020 ~ July 31st, 2021

The employee of the large-sized enterprise
April 1st, 2020 ~ June 30th, 2020
January 8th, 2021 ~ July 31st, 2021

Online in Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare website.

Amount

80% of your average daily payment before shutdown (maximum 11,000 yen per day) for the number of days that your employer ask you to leave
