Another Scholarship Option to Study in Japan
There are many options for scholarships to pursue study in Japan. MEXT scholarship is one of the most popular scholarships that might be challenging to pass the selection. However, one of our Muslim sisters from Indonesia succeeded to pursue her study at the International University of Japan (IUJ) in Niigata Prefecture with the ADB (Asian Development Bank) Scholarship.
According to the website, “The ADB-Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) offers about 135 graduate scholarships a year for studies in economics, business and management, science and technology, and other development-related fields”.

How to Secure a Japan Scholarship?
Why Japan?
She has been to Japan for a trip a few times, and today she came back to Japan to study.

Fully-Funded ADB Scholarship at IUJ
The scholarship covers all the fees, from tuition and admission fees during the program to a monthly allowance of about 144,000 yen.
The details are as follows, according to the website:
- full tuition fees
- monthly subsistence allowance (including housing)
- books and instructional materials
- medical insurance
- travel expenses
For scholars engaged in research, a special grant may be available for thesis preparation. In particular circumstances, computer literacy, primary language, and other similar courses may be covered under the scholarship.
In applying for the scholarship, each university has a different process and deadline. You will need to find a university you are willing to apply to on the list and one of them is the IUJ in Niigata Prefecture.
In the application process, if you are passing the evaluation and review from the university, then you will be recommended by the university to be eligible to get a scholarship.
Regarding the ADB scholarship to IUJ, they open registration 3 times a year, where students are highly recommended to apply at the first and second registration because it has a higher possibility to get fully-funded scholarships.
According to our source, when she passed the document screening process at the university, the university nominate her for a scholarship program that match her background, and in her case, she was nominated to ADB scholarships which then require her to complete the necessary documents. The result will be announced by email.

Is Japanese Proficiency Necessary?
This is one of the things that most people are concerned about. ADB scholarship does not require Japanese ability and you can choose an English course for your study. However, other scholarships that are available at IUJ, such as AEON Scholarship, might require the applicant to be able to understand Japanese.
Who Can Apply For The Scholarship?
Those who may apply for this scholarship are candidates from ADB borrowing member countries and Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible countries, one of which is Indonesia, must have worked full time for at least 2 years, and are less than 35 years old when registering and are required to return to their homeland for at least 2 years to contribute to the country.
