Showcasing Food Diversity Through Hiroshima Okonomiyaki

At the G7 Hiroshima Summit, which commenced on May 19, 2023, journalists from around the world gathered at the International Media Center, where they were treated to a taste of Hiroshima’s renowned dish, okonomiyaki.

Notably, the dish was thoughtfully prepared to cater to both vegetarian and vegan dietary preferences.

The Okonomiyaki, which is also known as “Japanese pancake”, was served at a dedicated booth hosted by Otafuku Sauce Co. Ltd., a prominent food manufacturer based in Hiroshima Prefecture. To accommodate vegetarians and vegans, the traditional meat fillings were replaced with soy meat alternatives. Furthermore, Otafuku Sauce utilized their internationally popular vegan-friendly Otafuku Sauce to enhance the flavor.

Even the iron plate used to cook the Okonomiyaki was segregated to ensure separate preparation for meat and non-meat options.

The availability of this special Okonomiyaki drew the attention of numerous journalists, who eagerly indulged in this culinary delight. They marveled at its creative approach, relished its delightful taste, and took the opportunity to delve into the rich history of Hiroshima’s unique food culture.

Media outlets around the globe picked up on this extraordinary culinary experience, showcasing Hiroshima’s gastronomic offerings to a wider audience.

It’s worth noting that Otafuku Sauce Co. doesn’t limit its commitment to vegetarian and vegan options to this event alone. Within Japan, the company also offers animal-free products such as its Organic Okonomi Sauce catering to individuals seeking plant-based alternatives.
