Foreign Residents in Japan to Get Vaccinated

With a number of countries making fast progress on rolling out COVID-19 vaccines, the Japanese government is working to follow suit with its sights set on the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

In Japan, vaccines are currently available to people under age 65 and are free 0f charge for all residents, including foreign residents as long as they are registered within a municipality. Foreigner residents will get themselves vaccinated in the place where your residence card is issued.

The Process to Get COVID-19 Vaccine

Municipalities will send you a vaccination coupon along with papers about the information of COVID-19 vaccination. With this coupon, you can get the COVID-19 vaccination for free. Make sure that you are the one who can get the vaccination (check the name and address on your vaccination coupon carefully).

Once you get the vaccination coupon, you will be needed to make an appointment to get vaccinated by phone call or website. You will just need to follow the instruction as written in your vaccination coupon to proceed. When making a reservation on the website, you will be needed to input your ID as mentioned on the coupon and book a slot at the designated vaccination site.

The Day to Get Vaccinated

On the day of vaccination, please bring documents as follows:

・Vaccination coupon
・Identity card (ex: driver’s license, insurance card, residence card)
・Complete and print the Prevaccination Screening Questionnaire (in Japanese)

※There are 17 translations of the questionnaire available online for reference: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Indonesian, Khmer, Korean, Mongolian, Myanmar, Nepalese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese.

After completing the first shot, you will need to make another appointment for your second shot, in the same way you used in your first shot (phone call or website). Make sure you appoint the same type of vaccination you got in the first shot (ex: Pfizer, Moderna, etc).
