As a Muslim parent who resides in Japan, it is one of the challenges in considering where they should send their kids to get an education that is also considering the Islamic practice, from the food at school to the education itself. Also for those who are thinking to continue their studies in Japan, might need some insights in choosing schools/universities.

With the increase of foreigners reside in the country as well as the international students/exchange students, schools with consideration to those from various backgrounds are increasing which makes a better environment. In this article, we introduce schools that are chosen by Muslim residents to send their children for education and Muslims who continue their studies in Japan.

Darul Iman Kasugai Preschool  (Aichi Prefecture)

Darul Iman Kasugai Preschool is an Islamic preschool that is accepting children from 3 to 6 years old, located in Kasugai City, Aichi Prefecture. Established in April 2013, this school has a curriculum for Qur’an and Arabic learning, aqidah and akhlaq, to English learning and of course, with halal lunch available. The school is brought in Japanese but they also can communicate in English.

Kamitakaido Nursery School (Tokyo)

The nursery school operated by Japan Nursery Service Inc. which operated 200 nursery schools within Japan, which put consideration in welcoming kids from various backgrounds, especially in terms of food. They are paying close attention to those with allergies and religious dietary restrictions. They are currently taking care of children aged 0 to 6.

This kindergarten offers a school lunch made by the school itself managed by nutritionists. They take detailed considerations to food dietary and careful in selecting the ingredients used, which allows them to arrange the food with the children’s needs, from allergies to religious reasons.

Tokyo Metropolitan Kokusai High School

Established in 1989 and was the first high school in Tokyo that has a concept of “International Understanding Studies”, which the whole curriculum was dedicated to international understanding and accepting foreign students. The school has several sister schools around the world such as the USA, Korea, and Australia, which allows students to have international cultural exchange activities. This makes the school become a popular option for foreign residents to continue the study.

KINDERGARTEN TO HIGH SCHOOL

YUAI International Islamic School

Located in the Shibuya district near the infamous Tokyo Camii Mosque,  YUAI International Islamic School emphasizes Islamic values, character building, intellectual excellence, and creating an Islamic environment to enable students to implement Islamic lifestyle as much as possible. The school was launched in July 2016 with collaboration between the FGA Education Foundation and the Islamic Center of Japan and using English in daily conversation. The academic levels available are kindergarten, primary school, secondary school, and after school programs.

International Islamia School – Otsuka (IISO)

International Islamia School – Otsuka (IISO) is operated by the Japan Islamic Trust whose helping and serving the Muslim community in Japan for over decades. Sekolah Republik Indonesia Tokyo (SRIT)

It is the school for Indonesian children located in Meguro, Tokyo, just a few minutes away from Indonesian Embassy. SRIT isn’t an Islamic School, but since the majority is Muslim, they hold Islamic-related events regularly, such as Jum’ay pray, Eid Fitr pray, etc. The school use Bahasa Indonesia as the main language, then followed by English and Japanese. The academic level is available from kindergarten to high school.

Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) is a national research university located in Meguro, Tokyo, considered one of the most prestigious universities in Japan with numbers of international students. Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS)

Kanda University of International Studies is a private university located in Makuhari, Chiba Prefecture. KUIS has four undergraduate departments, and one of them is Asian Languages such as Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Thai. Their canteen called Asian Kitchen Shokujin serves Asian local foods such as Indonesian nasi goreng and opor ayam or Thailand’s gapao, that is one of the facilities to support interaction among Japanese students closer with international students.
