A Beloved Local Japanese Restaurant Introduces Muslim-Friendly Kamameshi for Muslim Diners
In the heart of Kumamoto City, where quiet streets and traditional townscapes reflect everyday Japanese life, Ginnan Kamameshi has long been cherished by locals for its carefully prepared kamameshi—rice cooked and served in individual iron pots.
At this restaurant, each kamameshi is cooked one pot at a time, using seasonal ingredients such as ginkgo nuts (ginnan) and fresh produce sourced from Kumamoto. When the lid is lifted, the gentle aroma of freshly cooked rice rises, and the warmth and flavor of the dish can be enjoyed at its best. It is this simple, honest approach to Japanese cooking that has earned Ginnan Kamameshi its loyal following.

Ginnan Kamameshi
Now, this well-loved restaurant has taken a meaningful step forward.
Starting December 2025, Ginnan Kamameshi has begun offering halal-friendly menu options, allowing Muslim diners to enjoy authentic Japanese kamameshi with confidence and peace of mind.
Until now, halal-friendly dining options in Kumamoto City have been extremely limited, often making it difficult for Muslim travelers and residents to fully enjoy local Japanese cuisine. With the heartfelt wish that “freshly cooked kamameshi can be enjoyed by everyone,” Ginnan Kamameshi embraced a new challenge—one rooted in hospitality and inclusivity.
Halal Wagyu Kamameshi, Made with Care
The halal menu features carefully selected Kuroge Wagyu from Kumamoto Prefecture, known for its tender texture and naturally sweet flavor. As the wagyu cooks together with the rice, its rich umami slowly seeps into each grain, creating a deeply satisfying yet comforting dish.
The moment the iron pot is opened, the aroma fills the air—inviting, warm, and unmistakably Japanese. Every bite delivers the harmony of fluffy rice and flavorful wagyu, making the experience as enjoyable as it is memorable.

Using Halal wagyu
Two halal kamameshi options are available:
-
Halal Wagyu Don Kamameshi
Tender wagyu simmered in a gently sweet and savory sauce, perfectly balanced with freshly cooked rice. -
Halal Wagyu Bibimbap Kamameshi
A colorful and flavorful dish combining halal wagyu and vegetables, inspired by Korean-style bibimbap while remaining true to the kamameshi tradition.
Both dishes are designed to highlight aroma, taste, and texture—allowing diners to experience the full charm of wagyu in a uniquely Japanese way.

Easy to Order, Warmly Welcomed
The halal menu can be ordered without advance notice, making it accessible for both travelers and local diners. However, as Ginnan Kamameshi is a popular restaurant among residents, securing a seat in advance is recommended, especially during busy hours.
Reservations can be made easily via the restaurant’s official Instagram direct messages, ensuring a smooth and relaxed dining experience.
This initiative reflects a growing movement in regional Japan—where traditional cuisine evolves naturally to welcome people of diverse backgrounds, without losing its identity.
