It is well known that eel plays an important role in Japanese culture and cuisine, and is a delicacy in the heat of the summer.  There are two type of eel that usually being consumed: fresh water eel (Unagi) and salt water eel (Anago). Unagi (freshwater eel) is known for its bold, rich taste, while Anago (saltwater eel), is a more muted choice, known for its incredibly soft texture and natural sweetness. Recently I have been wondering if there is any halal eel rice bowl that consumable by moslems. Here in Japan, most of the eel on the eel rice bowl are cooked using mirin/sake as one of the ingredients in the sauce which makes me as a moslem could not try eel rice bowl.

Anago Rice Bowl

Last time I went to Sushi Ken at Asakusa. I actually came there for the sake of eating halal sushi as reported by HMJ that they could provide sushi without using mirin/sake for moslem customers. Suddenly As I saw that Sushi Ken is not only sushi bar but sushi restaurant (which also offers some other menus), I asked if they have Unagi Rice Bowl menu. Unfortunately they do not have it, but the waitress offered us the Anago Rice Bowl set menu. “OK”, I said. “I would like to have that one”.

ANAGO CHIRASHI

This Anago Rice Bowl menu set is incredible! With 1300 yen you got the Unagi rice bowl with sliced tamago yaki, salad, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), and misoshiru (miso soup). The eel rice bowl itself is really worth the price. With the super soft texture of the eel and its natural sweet flavor, it melts in your mouth and make you can’t stop eating. And the portion of this eel rice bowl itself is really big though.

So if you are hunting Eel rice bowl in Japan, you got to come to Sushi Ken. Just let the waitress know that you would like to eat halal menu (they will make what you order mirin/sake free) and mention the menu name: Anago Chirashi.
